What Are Bloodlines?
A bloodline refers to dogs descended from particular breeding programs that have consistently produced dogs with specific characteristics. Over generations, breeders select for type, temperament and health, creating recognizable "families" within the breed.
Major English Lines
Elitebull
One of the most respected English bloodlines:
- Known for exceptional breed type and balance
- Strong, compact build with excellent heads
- Consistent producers of show-quality dogs
- Multiple UK champions in their pedigrees
Other Notable English Lines
- Dorastaff: Classic English type
- Doramore: Strong show record
- Doroteo: Well-established breeding program
Irish Lines
Lackyle
Premier Irish bloodline with worldwide influence:
- Known for substance and bone
- Excellent temperaments
- Strong, typey heads
- Consistent quality across generations
Choosing a Bloodline
Consider these factors when evaluating bloodlines:
- Type consistency: Do dogs from this line consistently meet the standard?
- Health record: Are health tests done? What's the longevity?
- Temperament: What are dogs from this line typically like?
- Breeder reputation: How long have they worked with this line?
Reading a Pedigree
A pedigree tells you about a dog's ancestry. Look for:
- Champions (CH.) indicating show quality
- Kennel names (prefixes/suffixes) showing lineage
- Health test results for parents and grandparents
- Inbreeding coefficient
